Beyoncé Is the Gift That Keeps on Giving, If Your Name Is Reese Witherspoon - Vulture

Friendship can take many forms and blossom between two people at any time. Sometimes it strikes two children teeter-tottering on a see-saw, other times it strikes two of the most famous women on the planet at the height of their careers. The friendship bolt seems to have struck Beyoncé and Reese Witherspoon pretty hard, as Reese has received not one but two (2) presents from the ever-benevolent Queen Bey. The first present? A bottle of Beyoncé and Jay Z's signature Champagne. The second? A truly massive orange box containing B's soon-to-be-released new line for Ivy Park.

Journalists apologize for mocking Beyoncé's daughter Blue Ivy - Today.com

Posted: 04 Jan 2020 12:00 AM PST

Two reporters apologized this week for rude comments they made on Twitter about the appearance of Beyoncé and Jay-Z's 7-year-old daughter, Blue Ivy Carter.

It all started on Wednesday when rapper Megan Thee Stallion posted two fun, black-and-white photo booth shots of herself, Beyoncé and Blue Ivy ringing in the new year.

That's when Vanity Fair film critic K. Austin Collins chimed in, "I have a feeling the jay z face genes are about to really hit Blue Ivy and I feel so sorry for her."

Violet Lucca, a web editor for Harper's, replied to Collins' tweet, "They haven't already?"

"Or she'll just get plastic surgery at 16 a la Kylie Jenner and we'll all have to pretend that she always looked that way…I can't allow myself to feel too sorry for the incredibly rich!" Lucca added.

Trending stories, celebrity news and all the best of TODAY.

Both journalists were immediately blasted for commenting on the 7-year-old's appearance.

"Why would an adult come out of their face and say anything negative about anyone's child? Unbelievable is anything off limits? You never say anything negative about anyone's child period!" said one Twitter response. "Look at her she's beautiful and just hanging with mommy and Megan."

"This is a beautiful girl!" someone else replied.

Lucca and Collins apologized and have since deleted their offending tweets. However, since nothing ever truly goes away on the internet, screenshots of their remarks continued to circulate on Twitter.

"I'm sorry about the Blue Ivy tweet — bad joke, and black girls in particular deserve better," Collins tweeted Wednesday. When told by one user he should never have published the tweet, Collins responded: "you're right. Poor form on my end. Thanks all for calling it out."

Lucca apologized in tweets on Wednesday and Thursday.

"Sorry I was cleaning my apartment while this blew up...children of famous ought to be off limits, but time and again they haven't been. So I said something petty and have been called ugly, old, and a racist," she wrote in a tweet Wednesday night.

"We've been moved to the evil category and there's no way for us to get out of it," Lucca wrote. "I'm sure there will be plenty of people responding to this saying I'm playing the victim by pointing this out."

She added that she was "truly sorry to anyone who was reminded of past hurt" because of her comments.

"I truly believe Blue Ivy will go to the grave without knowing who I am, which is neither here nor there, but on the off chance she sees it—I'm sorry, young lady. You're gonna go far no matter what," Lucca tweeted.

While Blue Ivy was unfortunately dragged into headlines this week due to the mockery, next week is shaping up to be a fabulous one for Beyoncé's first born. She'll be celebrating her eighth birthday on January 7!

Happy birthday, Blue!

Celebrities delay announcing what baby name is - TODAY

Posted: 15 Jan 2020 11:34 AM PST

More and more celebrities are choosing to delay the announcement of their children's names — weeks, months, or even years after the births. In December, Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach revealed their son's name in Vogue, ten months after his birth. (The frustration of waiting for ten months quickly dissolved once we learned his name was Harold Ralph Gerwig Baumbach).

Gerwig and Baumbach fall into the category of celebrities who hide their children's names for privacy reasons. This is the same group of stars who cover their children's faces with emojis on Instagram or eschew social media altogether. It's a form of going off the grid, allowing them to revel in private time with their baby before they are ready to share their news with the world.

Nameless celebrity babies

However, there are stars who go further, choosing never to let us in on their children's names. Joseph Gordon-Levitt has two sons—ages two and four—whose names are unknown to the public, and he intends to keep it that way. In a 2015 interview on Live with Kelly and Michael, Gordon-Levitt explained, "[My son] hasn't made the choice to be in the public eye, and that's a choice I would like him to be able make when he's older, when he can think about these kinds of things and make that decision for himself."

Pharrell Williams and his wife Helen welcomed triplets in 2017, never revealing the name or sex of any of the three (and their oldest son is named Rocket, so you know these are good names). A handful of notable starbaby births from the past few years, including the children of Claire Danes, Hugh Grant, and Rachel Weisz, were never followed up with name announcements.

Trending stories, celebrity news and all the best of TODAY.

Celebrities like Rachel McAdams and more recently, Anne Hathaway, abstained from the traditional representative-confirmed birth announcement, instead leaving it up to paparazzi photos to verify that they had given birth. The Daily Mail recently caught Anne Hathaway out and about with her family—plus an infant car seat—but the baby's sex, let alone name, is still anyone's guess.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds have confirmed that their third child is another girl, but they've not yet revealed her name. When asked about it on The Today Show, Reynolds joked, "We're going to be original, and all the letters in her name are silent."

It's hard to tell whether Lively and Reynolds are delaying the announcement for reasons of privacy or spectacle (although the two aren't necessarily mutually exclusive), because the fact of the matter is, if you're a big enough celebrity, your child's name announcement is going to be news no matter when you announce it.

Dramatic name announcements

Some celebrities capitalize on this fact, imposing a waiting period on the name for the drama of it all. The trick is to wait the perfect amount of time—enough so that the public gets antsy, but not so much that they move on to other celebrity gossip. Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, old pros at this by now, waited about a week between each of their children's birth and name announcements. North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm's names were revealed via simple tweets, but that did the trick—the press and public went berserk.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z waited even longer — a whole month — before announcing the names of their twins, Rumi and Sir. The Instagram post publicizing the names was pure drama, featuring a veiled Beyoncé in a ruffled dress, holding her twins in front of a floral arch overlooking the o cean. In other words, made for the media.

Name announcement trends

Delayed announcements aren't just a trend among celebrities though. Parents around the country are waiting to reveal their babies' names, usually until after birth. It's the latest best-practice in baby naming, and we dole out this advice to expecting parents all the time.

Before a baby is born, a name is merely a concept. Parents, coworkers, and anyone else you decide to share the name with are going to have opinions — often strong opinions — on the name you so carefully chose for your darling child. Maybe Cecilia was the meanest girl in school, or Ira was their mom's ex-boyfriend. People won't be afraid to tell you! But when that name is attached to a person (particularly a sweet, baby-faced person), it's harder to argue with.

Of course, like celebrity moms and dads, there are parents who choose to reveal their child's name in a more dramatic fashion, usually with a perfectly-styled Instagram shot, or occasionally a name reveal party. For those who have the name locked-in (and won't be swayed by other's opinions), this can be an exciting undertaking before the baby is born. But a few days after birth seems to be the most common time to announce a child's name.

The timing of a name announcement is a personal choice, and in a time when much of our private lives are lived publicly on the internet, it's understandable that more parents — celebrities or not — are choosing to delay the reveal.

#MeToo Gave Women a Voice but Solutions Still Missing: Novelist Adichie - The New York Times

Posted: 16 Jan 2020 07:58 AM PST

SANTIAGO — The #MeToo movement may have given women's rights a boost but the drive for gender equality still takes "two steps forward, and one step backwards," Nigerian novelist and activist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie told Reuters on Monday.

Adichie, whose TED talk, 'We Should All Be Feminists,' inspired a Beyonce song and a Christian Dior T-shirt collection, said women may be making strides in the workplace and public life, but still bear the lion's share of domestic work.

"The #MeToo movement in many parts of the world made it possible for women to start talking about things that women couldn't talk about, so for me that's progress of sorts," the author said on the sidelines of a conference in the Chilean capital Santiago.

"Often, it feels as though it's two steps forward and one step backwards. We are talking about it but we haven't quite found the solutions yet."

She said children were still often being raised with "ingrained gender roles."

"The idea of domestic work, for example, who does it, is it something people should be paid for?" she said. "In many countries across the world, it's still thought of as something that women should do."

"Because of that, women are doing domestic work at home and also working outside the home. Women are now doubly burdened and so what can seem like equality really isn't. In the future, we have to address that; otherwise, it will take women back even more."

Adichie, whose award-winning novels - including Americanah, Purple Hibiscus and Half of a Yellow Sun - address issues of gender, race, identity and immigration, also took a swipe at U.S. President Donald Trump, saying his stricter approach to migration from Central and South America represented "cruelty for the sake of cruelty."

"This administration has criminalized immigration in a way that I think is immoral," she said. "Many people want to come to the U.S. not because they are criminals or bad people but because they want better for themselves."

"I don't think all countries should have open borders but what's happening in the U.S., where children are being treated in the most horrendous way, is quite unnecessary. It's cruelty for the sake of cruelty."

Trump has made clamping down on migration a top priority of his current term in office and his 2020 re-election campaign. In July, the American Civil Liberties Union asked a judge to stop the Trump administration's practice of separating families https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-immigration-children/over-900-children-separated-at-u-s-border-since-policy-halted-aclu-idUSKCN1UP2KZ at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Adichie was the keynote speaker at Chile's Future Congress, an event that brings together notable thinkers and scientists to debate solutions to issues like social inequality and climate change.
