122.52 Carat Blue Diamond Found in Cullinan Mine

Petra Diamonds has announced the recovery of a 122.52-carat blue diamond at the Cullinan mine in South Africa. This find is the latest from a mine that is a renowned source of exceptionally large diamonds and natural blue diamonds.

The mine produced a 29.6-carat blue diamond, which sold for $25.6 million in February 2014.

Another blue from the mine, weighing 25.5 carats, sold for $16.9 million in 2013.

The mine's most famous diamond, the Cullinan, is the largest gem-quality diamond ever found.  Discovered in 1905, the rough white diamond weighed 3106.75 carats.  It was cut into 9 large stones and 96 smaller stones.  The two largest stones cut from the Cullinan rough are part of the British Crown Jewels.

The new blue diamond is about the size of a strawberry.  It will be analyzed to determine its potential value but it is expected to set a record price!
