The latest Sonic the Hedgehog movie set photos feature James Marsden as a human police officer and Jim Carrey looking rather unlike his character's video game counterpart, Dr. Robotnik. After 28 years of racing sometimes-literal circles around his enemies (and collecting lots of gold rings along the way), the famously super-fast blue hedgehog will make his way to the big screen at long last in 2019. DuckTales voice actor Ben Schwartz is lending his voice to Sonic in the film, which itself will combine live-action actors/environments with CGI.
Directed by Jeff Folwer (the Oscar-winning 2004 animated short Gopher Broke), Sonic the Hedgehog pairs the titular hedgehog with Tom Wachowski (Marsden), a hapless human cop tasked with trying to keep up with Sonic and prevent the evil Dr. Robotnik (Carrey) from wrecking havoc on the world. The other human players here include Tika Sumpter (Ride Along), Neal McDonough (Legends of Tomorrow) and Natasha Rothwell (Insecure), though details on their characters are being kept largely under lock and key for the time being.

Meanwhile, Carrey and Marsden have begun shooting their scenes for Sonic the Hedgehog and the first leaked photos from the film's set show the former looking... well, not at all like Robotnik from the original video games. Take a peek, below (via the Twitter user NotBrandonLee):
Seeing as this is a set photo leak and not a proper screenshot from the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, there could be some much-needed context missing for this image. For example, the scene being filmed here might involve Carrey as Robotnik being in disguise as a old man with a thick beard and hair (hence, he doesn't have his trademark bald head and orange mustache). Then again, it's also possible that Robotnik will simply look like this in the film for story reasons that have been to be explained.
Between Robotnik's appearance here (be it a disguise or not) and the movie's creatives describing Schwartz's version of Sonic as being a "juvenile delinquent", it's clear the film is making some big changes to the basic elements of the Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise. To be fair, the source games don't exactly lend themselves to a cinematic adaptation naturally, so it was probably inevitable that the film version would significantly change things up. Still, Hollywood has an infamously rocky track record when it comes to re-imagining video games for the big screen, so who knows how the final result will turn out here.
